Bunk 9’s Guide to Growing Up: Secrets, Tips, and Expert Advice on the Good, the Bad, and the Awkward by Adah Nuchi (Author), Meg Hunt (Illustrator)

This is the book about puberty that I have been waiting for!

“Written in the voice of the counselors in training at the fictional Camp Silver Moon, it’s like having your best friend or older sister share everything there is to know about being comfortable in your changing body. From periods, bras, and hormones to nutrition, exercise, and sleep—to crushes, that first kiss, and ALL the feels—it’s the head-to-toe guide to not only surviving puberty but totally, 100% owning it!”

My big gripe with most books on this topic—even ones that are really good—is that they don’t talk about variations such as breast size and shape, inverted nipples and different ways that your period may appear. I know that I spent a lot of time as a pre-teen wondering why my nipples didn’t pop out like the rest of my friends. I was way too embarrassed to talk to anyone about this and had no idea that it is quite common for females to have inverted nipples. I was also taken by surprise when my period first appeared as a bit of brownish coloring on my underwear. I didn’t suspect that this was the start of my period and thought I had a terrible disease. The teachers and books had talked about red blood which I assumed would be gushing in the same way as if you picked at a hangnail.

This book centers around a group of girls at summer camp. Just like in real life these girls have different body sizes, shapes, and experiences (with beautiful illustrations I may add). In the chapter on breasts, for example, they talk about the size and shape of the breast, areolas, and nipples. One girl had breasts by age 8 while another girl is flat-chested. One girl’s breasts are different sizes and another has some hair growing near the nipple. I think this book is very reassuring and friendly in its approach. But with all things, read it yourself first to make sure it fits with your family values.
